Developer Kung Fu Factory has just announced that their latest game,Spartacus Legends, will be launching with a free-to-play scheme on the XBLA and PSN platforms. You’ll be able to assemble your own manly gladiatorial duder tofight other manly gladiatorial duders soon, as the game launches in the first quarter of 2013.

This might be a big deal to some of you, as there are rarely any free-to-play games to be found on Microsoft and Sony systems. We talked about aGundamgameon the PSN quite a while back, and there are a few more examples (Ape Quest), but the scheme is fairly unique to the mobile and PC platforms. That’s all about to change, as Microsoft is rolling out their pilot free-to-play program to catch up to what Sony has already been doing for some time.

Oh, and the game apparently also features permadeath, which could either be really cool, or really terrible. Yes folks, because microtransactions and permadeath go together so well.

As a fan of the show, I can’t say I’m too excited for the game, but as a free-to-play joint, it’ll no doubt drum up some DVD/Blu-Ray sales and get people hyped for Season 3 (which will be the final season). Mission accomplished, I guess.
