The First Contact mission inStarfieldinvolves trying to help a group of colonists who are essentially stuck in the past. What they want and what the people on the planet below them want is entirely at odds, and it is up to you to help them out. You’ll get this mission when you first arrive at Porrima II in the Porrima system.
First Contact walkthrough
The First Contact mission opens with you getting a hail from the surface of Porrima II. Chief Sugiyama tells you about the weird ship orbiting them. you may either go down to the surface and chat with him ordock directly with the ship. I’d suggest docking with the ship to save a little time. If you hail them, all you will get is static.
When you get onboard the ship, you will find a welcoming committee. Led by Captain Diana Brackenridge, they are a group of colonists that left Earth 200 years ago in pursuit of somewhere new to live. The thing is, 200 years is a long time, and space-faring technology has improved a lot since then. They have lost the race to Porrima II. Chat with them to get all the details, then head down to the surface.
Chat with Sugiyama if you need to, and he will tell you to speak with the CEO of Paradiso. This is where you will begin to understand the nature of this mission. Oliver, the CEO, will present you with three acceptable solutions to the problem.
What happens if you convince them to settle elsewhere
This is, essentially, the good option. The Grav Drive will cost you 25,000 Credits, but it does outfit the ship with the device they need to travel at modern speeds and will allow them to find a new home. You will need to visit a character called Bennu St. James at Hope Tech and get a suitable Grav Drive from him. He’ll want 40,000 Credits, but you can talk him down to 25,000 instead.
Now, make your way back to the Earth Colony Ship above Porimma II, and you’ll need to help install the drive. There are a number of things you need to do here:
Once all that is done, the Grave Drive is set up. Chat with the Captain, and you can be on your way.
What happens if you convince them to stay
So, it seems that CEO Oliver is a bit of an unsavory type. For the colonists to stay, they will need to work, and they will also need to provide a lot of resources. This takes time, which is far more valuable than money. You canearn money in all kinds of waysfor the first option. The only way to get these is to go from planet to planet, searching for them. That’s a big no from me, and I don’t suggest you waste your time.
What happens if they cease to exist
This is the only option that really rewards you, and CEO Oliver will give you 6500 Credits if you blow up the ship. That is a little bit more than the average bounty for mass murder. You also get access to the resort, but I am not sure that free drinks beside the pool are enough in this case.
For my money, the correct course of action is the Grav Drive option. If you do this, you will be asked to come and visit them later in the game, and you won’t spend forever mining materials or have the blood of hundreds of people on your hands. Kind of a win-win situation if you ask me.
