We’ve featured musician Shnabubula’s videogame-themedalbumsin thepast, so I’m nothing less than pleased about his latest endeavor. Back in May, he releasedSNESology, a completely free collection of original music that used instrument soundsets from specific SNES games. However, that was just the start of something bigger.
Shnabubula has since invited various artists from the arrangement community to contribute their own SNES-inspired songs to theongoing SNESology initiative. Among thecurrently available tunesare original numbers as well as remakes of pre-existing game tracks in the style of a completely different game. For example, above is RoeTaKa’s cover of “Tears” fromMax Payne 3using theContra IIIsoundset. Some pretty high quality stuff! Serves as a reminder of just how amazing SNES music was and always will be.
Eventually, the soundsets that the artists used will be made available publicly so that any aspiring musician can tool around with them. In the meantime, follow the project onFacebookand listen to some more choice submissions after the break.
