Chillingo, a UK-based publisher, announced an iPhone port of the adventure titleReturn to Mysterious Islandtoday at GDC. The announcement also came with a hefty boast. Weighing in at 300 MB, the game will be one of the largest iPhone titles to hit the App store.
Return to Mysterious Island— based on the Jules Verne novel “The Mysterious Island” — was originally released on PC in 2004. The story revolves around an idiot who decides to sail around the world by herself. At some point during the moronic journey, the woman, Mina, finds herself on an abandoned island, full of things to click on and explore.
I never had the pleasure of playing the PC or other mobile versions, but I hope the point of the game is to get off the island. I don’t know how comfortable I would be with building coconut huts, making friends with wolves, or painting faces on volleyballs.
Chillingo and Tetraedge sign deal to launch Return To Mysterious Island for iPhone and iPod Touch
United Kingdom – 27th March 2009 – Chillingo Ltd, Europe’s premier iPhone publisher has inked a deal with French-based mobile development studio Tetraedge Inc today at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco to launch the iPhone port of Microsoft Windows based adventure game of the same name inspired by Jules Verne’s novel “The Mysterious Island”.
“Return to Mysterious Island” is a content rich adventure game, part of the Microids catalog, the leader in adventure games standing at approximately 300Mb in size, possibly the biggest game to launch on the iPhone in the Apple App Store. This popular game which has already gained a huge cult following on Windows Desktop, Windows Mobile and Symbian platforms follows Mina, a strong-willed young woman alone on a round-the-world sailing expedition. Caught in a tremendous storm, she becomes stranded on the shores of a wild and apparently uninhabited island. As she explores her new surroundings, she uncovers artifacts, living spaces and technologies left behind by the people who came before her to this uncharted island.
Franck Devisme, CEO of Tetraedge Inc said “In Return To Mysterious Island, there is no game-imposed linear ordering to how the game is played. Every player will have their own unique ways of advancing through the game.” He added “The iPhone multi-touch features takes the game-play of this classic adventure game to new levels never yet seen before. We will also look into social networking aspects of the game to leverage the 3G connectivity of the iPhone.”
“We are very excited about this collaboration with our long-term development partner Tetraedge. This is going to be “literally” the biggest adventure game to hit the iPhone since the App Store was launched last year.” says Chris Byatte, co-Founder and Managing Director for Chillingo. Chillingo are the publishers of popular iPhone titles including the award winning Zen Bound™ which has won the Best iPhone Game award at the GDC this week. Their recent title “iDracula – Undead Awakening” zoomed up the App Store charts days after its release.
