I’m not one forFOMO,feature deprecation, andcontent sunsetting. Time and again, I’ve voiced my opinions on these matters, but the schtick keeps rearing its ugly head quite often. The latest (potential) victim? Fishing in Destiny 2, believe it or not, is as beloved as it might be.
Destiny 2introduced fishinginto its eclectic mix of activities during the Season of the Deep. Veteran players will know that this was, essentially, during the height of the community’s unhappiness withhow Bungie was handling the year ofLightfall. As such, this simple little activity became a bit of a highlight in trying times, even if it wasn’t hugely significant in the grand scheme of things. It’s a bit of a bummer, then, that Bungieappearsto be looking to sunset fishing inDestiny 2with the release ofThe Final ShapeDLC, as per its recently updated “Items Being Deprecated at the Start of Year 7”webpage.
Destiny 2’s fishing system is being ‘deprecated’ in The Final Shape
Now, the only reason why I’m saying “probably” is that Bungie is yet to chime in on the matter of sunsetting the fishing mini-game inDestiny 2. The studio is very well aware ofthe community’s stance on content sunsetting, and it’s certainly possible that the feature will be brought back in some form down the line. As per the blog mentioned above, though, the Fishing Tackle is one of the items that will be 100% unavailable afterThe Final Shapecomes out.
This shouldn’t come as a surprise, perhaps. As widely accepted and celebrated as the recentInto the Lightcontent drop might’ve been, for one,a huge chunk of it will be carved out of the game withThe Final Shapeas well. Most notably, this includes thePantheon boss-run mode, which is one of those thingspeoplehavewantedaccess to for quite a long while now. At least the horde survival/defense mode is bound to stick around, I suppose?
One thing I’d like to highlight here is that I don’t even like fishing inDestiny 2. It just doesn’t feel like it fits into the game properly, especially now as the Guardians prepare for their final clash with The Witness and its Dread faction. Still, I hate to see the activity being yanked out of the game. Especially one that’s as innocuous and inoffensive as this. Who knows: the Fishing Tackle may end up being reintroduced at some point in the future. Perhaps even as a timed exclusive, as Bungie suggested might happen with the Pantheon.
Whatever the case may be, the good news is thattheDestiny 2community is now calm and collected, just weeks away fromThe Final Shape‘s grand release. From the looks of it, everyone is waiting to see if this is yet anotherLightfall, or if we’re looking at something along the lines ofThe Taken King,Forsaken, orWitch Queen, as Bungie’s been promising all along.
