The latest title from legendary game creator Hideo Kojima has arrived, and it’s looking like another excellent addition to his repertoire.
Kojima has worked on many games throughout his illustrious career, but just a few all have the special treatment of being directed, designed, and written by the legend.Death Stranding 2: On the Beachis the latest such game to have this honor, and it’s gottenvery high review scoresnearly across the board.
But it’s impossible to talk about Kojima without discussing the incredible series he brought to life,Metal Gear. Starting in 1987,Metal GearandMetal Gear Solidhave spanned decades, creating some of the most memorable and iconic moments in gaming. After his unfortunate fallout with Konami, he went on to found Kojima Productions and releaseDeath Strandingin 2019 ahead of its sequel this week.
But Kojima has also done way more thanMGSandDeath Stranding.Policenauts, Snatcher,Zone of the Enders, Boktai: The Sun is in Your Hand, and several other titles have gotten Kojima’s love over the years. And this begs the question:what’s Kojima’s best game?Or at least, what’s your favorite?
For myself, it begins and ends withMGS, even if I do consider the firstDeath Strandingto be something of a misunderstood masterpiece. It’s a toss-up for me betweenMGS1, MGS2,andMGS3, but I also have huge places in my heart forMGS4, MGS5, andMGS: Peace Walkeras well. I even have an Outer Heaven logo tattooed on my upper left arm.
Kojima can be polarizing. His style of writing and game design may not be for everyone, and that’s fine. I’m a fan myself, but I can totally understand how his work can be offputting or uninteresting to some, but his work is worth discussing either way.
